THE BURI CRAFT PROJECT OF BOLINAO TURNS INTERNATIONAL


Barangay Pilar in Bolinao is known to be one of the largerst producers of Buri palm. From there forefather, the leaves from the Buri were taken and used to make different kinds of craft just like mat, bags and so on and so forth. So it became there primary source of income through selling this handicrafts.
Buri palm which in Bolinao dialect is called "silag" primary used as a raw material in m,aking mats and bags. Buri palm don't have it's trunk but webbed-like leaves. From the ground branches grow where the leaves are attached to it. It branches are full of thorns.
The young leaves of the palm are used in mat weaving, while when the leaves have already opened, it can be dried and used as wall of "bahay kubo" or the sticks from it can be made into broom sticks.
Nothing is wasted from the Buri palm because all of its part can be made into something new. At the year 1997 a livelihood committee was began to arise which organized by the HARRIBORN Foundation and UP MSI wherein they gathered crafts man usually woman to train thought by the HARRIBON and UP.
They held an organization which they called SAMMAKA INCORPORATION (Samahan ng mga Magsasaka at Mangingisda alay sa Kalikasan).
The organization is composed of man and woman. This committee is for a fund raising which they called RED (Research Education and Documentation), Resource Management in Community and Committee for livelihood and one of this is the Buri craft. As of now they have been in there farthest, there different kinds of Buri craft was became world class wherein from Local and International Marketing specifically Australia and Canada and then they brought same product there. In Local they joined in there National Exhibit which held in National Museum in Manila. Until now the livelihood was still working and continuously, International and Local.
